Acne
Acne is a common skin condition caused by inflammation of the skin glands and hair follicles. Acne is characterized by whiteheads, blackheads, and inflamed red pimples (also called zits) that occur mainly on the face, chest, and back. When the pores of these regions of skin become clogged with oil and bacteria, the skin becomes irritated resulting in an acne breakout.
Acne is most often found in young adults as their bodies go through the hormonal changes of puberty, although a significant number of adults suffer from acne too.
Causes of Acne
Acne occurs when tiny holes on the surface of the skin become clogged. These holes are called pores and each one is an opening to a canal. These canals are called follicles and each follicle contains a hair and an oil gland. The purpose of the oil glands is to help keep the skin lubricated and shed off old, dead skin cells. If the oil glands produce too much oil, then the pores are susceptible of becoming blocked and accumulating dirt, debris, and bacteria. The blockage is called a plug or comedone.
