Insomnia

Insomnia is the inability to fall or stay asleep. It can be a long-term or short-term problem that is caused by many conditions, diseases or circumstances. Insomnia is a feeling of not being able to get enough sleep. It's usually related to finding it hard to get to sleep, waking up without having had enough sleep or not feeling refreshed after sleep. Insomnia is the most common type of sleep disorder and is among the most frequent complaints brought to the attention of health care providers. Although estimates of the prevalence of insomnia vary among different studies, insomnia is thought to be an occasional problem for at least 33% of the general population and is a chronic problem for at least 10% of adults.

Insomnia is perhaps the second most prevalent health complaint after pain. It is twice as frequent in women as in men and its incidence increases with age. Insomnia is very common in modern society with an estimated 1/3 of Americans suffering from insomnia at any one point in time. Fortunately, the majority of cases are short-term and resolve within weeks, rarely requiring prolonged therapy. Insomnia is classified as chronic when it happens almost every night for at least one month. Insomnia can be related to a medical or psychiatric illness, can be caused by mental stress or excitement, or can be caused by your daytime and bedtime habits.
